You’re More Than You Think: How Mental Distortions Keep Us Small

Negative self-perception is just one of over 300 cognitive distortions recognized in psychology. These distortions shape the way we see ourselves and the world around us, creating a warped view of our abilities and self-worth.

Let me give you an example using my dog — Bailey the Labrador. He’s terrified of a rabbit, even though he’s fifty times its size and technically a hunting dog. He’s also scared of water and runs away when we try to lure him into the pool. His paws are built like a swimmer’s, but he doesn’t know that. He goes through life unaware of his size and potential. Meanwhile, he could be splashing around and loving every second of it.

And humans? We’re not much different.

If I asked you how many times you could hop on one leg in 15 seconds, you’d probably underestimate yourself. But if you set a timer and actually try it, you’d likely surprise yourself. Now, hopping may not be a life skill, but the thinking behind it affects far more important areas of life.

Someone might not go on that date. Someone else might stay stuck in a job they hate. Another person might hold back from sharing their ideas, thinking, “Who would care about my insights anyway?”

We shrink ourselves, our talents, our possibilities — all without even realizing what we’re truly capable of.

So here’s a tiny challenge and a bit of physical play: set a timer for 15 seconds and hop on one foot. Then share your numbers in the comments — what did you guess, and how many did you actually manage?
